~ Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, ★ Starred Review

”It all makes you think about the role of the picture book biography when an element of autobiography is worked in. It’s such a rare concept and I’m still parsing all of its ramifications. While I do so, I’ll page through Flying Paintings again. Beautifully rendered, it’s unique in more ways than one.”
~ Betsy Bird, Fuse #8

“Readers are immersed in the bold artistic style and spirit of
the Zhou brothers.”
~ Kirkus

“The transformative power of art takes center stage
… a fascinating introduction.”

The Flying Paintings of Wuming

The tale of a besieged family, a wise old grandmother, and a country in the midst of revolution centers on these two brothers who, inspired by an ancient legend, confront conflict and free their imaginations by painting together on the same canvas.

Illustrators: The Zhou Brothers

These two legendary artists, ShanZuo and DaHuang (known in childhood as Shaoli and Shaoning) paint their own story, bringing to it not only their incredible talent and unique form of collaborative art, but the truth of their own lived experience.

"People think we have the same idea and bring harmony to it before coming to the canvas. That's wrong. The value of the collaboration is that it opens up things that couldn't happen any other way."
~ DaHuang Zhou
